The cap of P. semilanceata is 5–25 mm (0.2–1.0 in) in diameter and 6–22 mm (0.24–0.87 in) tall. On the underside of the mushroom’s cap, there are between 15 and 27 individual narrow gills that are moderately crowded together, and they have a narrowly adnexed, almost free attachment to the stipe. Their color is initially pale brown but becomes dark gray to purple-brown with a lighter edge as the spores mature.
